Global South African Newsletter - 6 June 2014‏ : Jezile, Madlala and Hahn set for 20th anniversary program

luyaNjaMatCelebrated South African-born singer and choir director Luyanda Jezile and award-winning South Africa baritone Njabulo Madlala are to participate in the SA High Commission’s workshops and celebrations of the 20th anniversary of democracy from 11th-14th June.
Luyanda Jezile, of Lion King fame and a director of the South African Cultural Talents, will be the master of ceremonies at the South Africa Family Day at Allianz Park, home of the Saracens Rugby Club on Saturday 14th June.
The musical highlight of the day will be a concert by the top South African band Freshly Ground.
Jezile is father of the rapidly rising star Asanda Jezile, the 12-year-old phenomenon who was a finalist in the national television contest Britain’s Got Talent, was recently appoint director-for-life of the Desmond and Leah Tutu Peace Choir in Grantham, Lincolnshire.
The choir is due to perform two major concerts on and before International Mandela Day in Lincoln and Nottingham respectively.
Madlala, who is a well-known voice on the opera circuit in London, will take part in an arts and culture workshop on Friday 13th June at SA House where he will share the story of his Amazwi Omzansi opera singing project in South Africa and discuss the role of arts and culture in building a nation.
Playwright Matthew Hahn, author of the Robben Island Bible, will stage a reading from the script for a group of high school students from schools in London and Leeds on Wednesday 11th June in a day of workshops on education and sport at South Africa House.
On Friday, Hahn will conduct “theatre for development workshops” with students from St Mary’s University in Twickenhan to demonstrate the value of cross-cultural inter-action with students, some of who have done workshops in South Africa.
